The solution

A holiday email from leadership primed associates for a direct mail piece in the new year. A fresh start for a new value. This kicked off an internal campaign for associate stories describing what makes them unique, or experiences that had changed their perspective. The stories were shared on eBoards at our care sites, offices and the intranet. This demonstrated our diversity and kept people talking about inclusion.

The outcome

This work was enlightening. It further opened my eyes to how we speak and write about others, the impact it has on their experiences and how empathy plays a role in not just life, but the content development process. It's a constant learning curve that requires curiosity and a drive for continuous improvement. My manager and I shared many resources with our department, like those provided through the Associated Press, to ensure we used inclusive language and revised style rules when appropriate.

My contributions:
  • I developed the launch assets and a set of key messages to standardize how the organization spoke and wrote about inclusion.

  • I provided strategy, writing and editing support for Inclusion-related projects that followed the launch, including the one-year recap report and campaign refresh, a gender-affirming care guide, our associate pledge, leadership emails, videos and recruitment ads.

  • In 2020, OhioHealth hosted a virtual event for organizations from across the region that are committed to diversity and inclusion. I interviewed local leaders and drafted scripts from the transcripts our videographer used to create two videos used during the event.

The inclusion launch won senate and systemwide recognition with an OhioHealth Prism Award. It is given to a select few who exemplify the core values.

I did independent research and collaborated with gender-affirming care providers to produce educational content and landing pages about the clinical services OhioHealth provided.
